The Caraboat: A Dual-Purpose Adventure Vessel

The Caraboat was designed with two main purposes:

  1. Supporting Long-Distance Electric Vehicle Travel
As a compact, self-sufficient tiny home, the Caraboat extends the range of electric vehicles. It features a 15kWh lithium battery bank, charged by a 700 watt solar array or an external charger. This setup provides off-grid power, making long distance travel more sustainable and convenient.

  2. Exploring Sheltered Waterways with Ease
Designed for easy launch and retrieval, the Caraboat allows access to reservoirs, lakes, canals, estuaries, and other calm waters. It can be propelled by pedal drive, solar power, or an electric motor, depending on watercourse restrictions and solar availability. In full sun, the solar array alone provides enough power to maintain walking speed.

Construction and Design

The build began with an aluminium trailer, fabricated from scrap box section. The Caraboat’s main body follows a surfboard-style composite construction, using a 20mm honeycomb core a semi rigid panel system bent into shape by stitching. Both sides are reinforced with fibreglass, creating a lightweight yet durable structure with built-in thermal and acoustic insulation.

With experience in surfboard and kayak repair and construction, I applied similar techniques to achieve strength, low weight (300kg), and hydrodynamic efficiency. The result is a vessel that tows easily and can even be moved by hand or a small electric winch at the front, allowing for easy beaching at remote locations.

Features and Living Space

  • Panoramic Visibility – Large windows provide all-around views for navigation and immersion in the surroundings.

  • Adjustable Solar Roof – The entire roof lifts up for standing room or can be tilted to maximise solar gain.

  • Convertible Seating & Sleeping – Bench seats along each side convert into a spacious double bed.

  • Compact Kitchen & Storage – The front section houses the kitchen and food storage, located behind a small titanium wood stove for cooking and heating.

  • Multiple Propulsion Options – A 1200 watt electric outboard efficiently powers the boat, with a pedal drive backup for restricted waters or added security.

The Advantage of Land & Water Mobility

One of the greatest benefits of the Caraboat is the ability to beach at remote locations. A well placed anchor allows easy transitions between land and water, making exploration more flexible. Sleeping onboard is particularly advantageous when the weather turns, providing a comfortable and secure retreat.
